Local Knowledge and International Experience for Indochina Market
The Indochina region comprising of Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Myanmar forms the backbone of the Greater Mekong Subregion (“GMS”) which is a natural economic area bound together by the Mekong River, covering 2.6 million square kilometers and a combined population of around 326 million.
The GMS countries are Cambodia, the People’s Republic of China (PRC, specifically Yunnan Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region), Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam.
With support from ADB and other donors, the GMS Program helps the implementation of high priority subregional projects in transport, energy, telecommunications, environment, human resource development, tourism, trade, private sector investment, and agriculture.
Since GMS inception in 1992, the GMS Program has undertaken 69 projects across 10 sectors. Of $16.8 billion in total project investments, about one third was financed by development partners, a third by ADB—which is the Secretariat for the GMS Program—and a further third by the GMS countries themselves.
Consequently, the Indochina countries stand to benefit economically from the GMP program which has helped to fuel the growth of their respective economies.
